Purple Coins are special coins that first appeared in Luigi's Mansion 4: Haunted Dreams. They appear when a Purple Spirit is haunting a mansion.

Mario or Luigi will have to collect 100 Purple Coins to make a Power Star appear, just like they do in Super Mario Galaxy. Some Purple Coin missions have time limits, which means the player will have to collect all of them before the time runs out. Purple Coin missions that have time limits will either have a linear way of collecting them or they might have more than the number of Purple Coins required for a Power Star to appear. Additionally, even when the player has already collected 100 Purple Coins or more, the time limit will still alter. This means that Mario or Luigi will still have to collect the Power Star before the time runs out.

The missions that do not have a time limit will have the Purple Coins scattered across the entire course, meaning the player will have to observe every area as possible in order to get a Power Star.

Purple Coins are collectible like regular Coins. However, unlike the regular Coins, Purple Coins are unable to replenish the character's health.

Purple Coins make a reappearance in Luigi's Mansion 5: Curse of the Mansion. Like the prequel, they appear in levels where there is a Purple Spirit, however, a minor change has been made. Unlike the previous game, whose timer still alters even after 100 Purple Coins are collected, the timer here will stop once the requirements are made.

Contrary to expectations, Purple Coins do not reappear in Luigi's Mansion 6: U Are Doomed!!, as Power Stars would appear once 100 Yellow Coins were collected.
